Martin Bakole ahead of Anthony Joshua in race for Daniel Dubois’ world title fight, says promoter Ben Shalom

Daniel Dubois defends the IBF world title against Joseph Parker on February 22 on Sky Sports Box Office; Martin Bakole is due to box Efe Ajagba in a final eliminator for that belt in May; Winning would put him “front of the queue” ahead of Anthony Joshua says promoter Ben Shalom

Dubois scored a stunning victory when he knocked out Joshua, a former unified titlist, at Wembley Stadium last year.

Next Dubois will be making a voluntary defence of the IBF belt against New Zealand’s in-form Joseph Parker on Saturday February 22, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

After that Dubois will have to either contest a world championship unification or make a mandatory defence of the belt.

Bakole will box Efe Ajagba in May in order to become the mandatory challenger for the IBF title.

Ben Shalom, Bakole’s promoter, told Sky Sports: “Martin can’t be avoided any longer. If he beats Efe Ajaba in May, he will be mandatory challenger to fight for the IBF world title, and we will be looking to enforce that mandatory immediately. He will be front of the queue and that fight will have to happen.”

He added: “Martin is the most feared man in the heavyweight division and with good reason. He will be keeping a close eye on the Dubois-Parker fight, and whatever the outcome, I know Martin will be confident of taking the title when his time comes.”

“If it’s not Fury, it’s just the world heavyweight championship. It’s Daniel Dubois against Joseph Parker,” Hearn previously told Sky Sports.

“AJ’s going to fight again regardless of who he fights. I think he didn’t take the defeat well, which is good. You should never take defeat well. But particularly over the last couple of weeks, he’s got his mojo back. He’s ready to start training camp.”

Hearn continued: “But the focus was always Tyson Fury and the Daniel Dubois rematch. I’m not so sure Daniel Dubois beats Joseph Parker. You’ve got the winner of that fight or somebody else.

“Really at this stage of your career you want the biggest fights and you want to try and become three-time world heavyweight champion.”

Warren: Joshua must win a fight

Though Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren points out that if Joshua wants to put himself in a position to challenge the February 22 winner he needs to make himself eligible. First AJ has “got to go and win a fight,” Warren told Sky Sports

Martin Bakole Has No Doubt Who Wins Daniel Dubois vs Parker: “I Know His Weakness From Sparring

Martin Bakole will be a keen observer when Daniel Dubois takes on Joseph Parker next month.

Parker and Dubois are two of the form men in the banner division. Dubois is the current IBF champion having been elevated after his knockout win over Fillip Hrgovic last June. That came just months after he also stopped the huge American Jarrell Miller in December 2023.

Most recently, he knocked out Anthony Joshua in destructive fashion in September to retain his belt, and now he faces former WBO champion Parker on February 22.

Parker’s last two outings have been impressive points wins against big punchers – first, he beat Deontay Wilder in late 2023, then Zhilei Zhang in March last year.

The pair square off on a huge bill that is headlined by Artur Beterbiev‘s undisputed light height rematch with Dmitry Bivol.

One fighter who would love to face the winner of Dubois versus Parker is Bakole, the man who calls himself the most avoided heavyweight on the planet.

Speaking to talkSPORT Boxing, he was asked who he thinks will win.

“I think Joseph Parker. Daniel Dubois he can box, he did well against Joshua, he’s the champion, much respect to him, but Joseph Parker his level is above, his boxing brain, his movement. I think he will give him a hard time.”

He then backed himself to beat whoever comes out on top.

“I have sparred both of them and I know their weakness and I know how to knock them out.”

Bakole stopped Carlos Takam and highly touted American Jarod Anderson in his last two fights. Next up is a contest with Efe Ajagba for the right to become the mandatory challenger for the IBF belt.

Martin Bakole Makes His Daniel Dubois vs Joseph Parker Prediction After Sparring Both

Martin Bakole is an imposing heavyweight who has shared the ring with both Joseph Parker and Daniel Dubois.

Bakole has long been referring to himself as ‘the most avoided heavyweight on the planet’ and there is some evidence to back that up. He has failed to land big fights despite an impressive run of victories in recent years. He handed Tony Yoka his first defeat, has stopped the likes of Carlos Takam and most recently demolished the previously unbeaten knockout merchant Jared Anderson.

With the help of an IBF order, he is not set to face Efe Ajagba in order to determine the mandatory challenger for the world title, currently held by Dubois.

Bakole therefore has a keen eye on the Brit’s upcoming defence against former WBO champion Parker on February 22. Both men are in top form right now. Dubois has stopped Jarrell Miller, Fillip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua in his last three contests, while Parker is coming off points wins over Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang.

Speaking to Eze Talks Sports, Bakole was asked to make his prediction having sparred several rounds with both men and making huge claims that he made Dubois ‘quit’ in one of those sessions. As such, he is backing Parker for the upset.

“I think Parker will win the fight, that’s my opinion.”

Bakole confirmed that he wants the winner after he beats Ajagba, but given that an undisputed fight with Oleksandr Usyk could be on the table for either Dubois or Parker, the Congolese heavyweight might again be left out in the cold, though he has been named as a potential opponent for Anthony Joshua.

Heavyweight ‘Obliterated’ Daniel Dubois In Sparring Before ‘Breaking His Nose And Making Him Quit’

Daniel Dubois has a long line of top contenders looking for a shot at his IBF Heavyweight World Title.

The 27-year-old Brit was one of the division’s success stories in 2024, entering the year with a win over Jarrell Miller and building on that by defeating Filip Hrgovic for the interim belt. He was then upgraded to full champion when Oleksandr Usyk vacated the title.

To legitimise his status as one of the best on the scene, Dubois knocked out Anthony Joshua in five rounds for his first defence.

He now faces Joseph Parker on February 22 and then will likely be called to fight a mandatory challenger. That just may be one Martin Bakole, but trainer Billy Nelson told Seconds Out that the champ will avoid his charge due to a much-discussed past sparring session.

“Usyk will not fight Martin and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Daniel vacated rather than fight Martin as well. They’ve been in the ring with each other before. Martin will stop Usyk and he’ll obliterate Daniel Dubois.

Daniel Dubois

Martin wasn’t fully fit when he sparred Daniel, about 70% fit, and schooled him. Stopped him, made him quit and broke his nose. It’s fact. Martin’s already told people what happened. I was there. Barry McGuigan was there. I’m not telling lies.

And he’s also stopped Usyk as he’s told you before, albeit I wasn’t there. But why would he come out publicly, live on Sky Sports, and say that he stopped Usyk if he didn’t? Either way, what a fantastic fight that would be. Usyk’s number one in the world for a reason.”

Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren strongly denies the broken nose claim.

Bakole – who has been criticised by some for revealing sparring details – scored a statement stoppage of rising star Jared Anderson in August. He has now been ordered to fight a final eliminator against Efe Ajagba to determine the number on contender for Dubois.

One of the most well-known heavyweight boxers in recent history, Anthony Joshua, has captured the interest of spectators everywhere.

With the backing of his Olympic Gold Medal and undeniable outstanding star quality, the Watford native, 34, rose to fame shortly after turning pro.

In an attempt to win three world titles, Joshua is now preparing for a crucial bout against Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium on September 21.

If he prevails, all eyes will be on a potential unification bout with the victor of the Usyk-Tyson Fury rematch.
