‘The Golden Boy’s Olympic success saw his pro career off to a good start and he went 31 fights undefeated until being served his first loss by Felix Trinidad. The only other men to beat him in a 45 fight campaign were Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao – the two men who would take over as faces of the sport.

n a recent interview with Club Shay Shay, De La Hoya dismissed the idea that Mayweather, known for his elite defence, couldn’t hit hard. Whilst doing so, he said that he wasn’t hurt in his final two stoppage losses.“

Oh he has power. He has power. I mean he didn’t hurt me, but he has a lot of power. I have a good chin. Pacquiao didn’t hurt me. Bernard [Hopkins] didn’t hurt me, I mean he caught me with that body shot. I have a good chin, but Floyd does have power.”

De La Hoya was stopped to the body by 39-year-old Hopkins in the ninth, lost a split decision over twelve to Mayweather and retired in his corner against ‘PacMan’ in what would be his final bout.

On the Combat Podcast, the fighter-turned-promoter said, perhaps surprisingly, that he rated the power of Mayweather and Pacquiao – who fought in 2015 with the American taking on the cards – the same

“I’d have say they were about the same … It’s funny, because I didn’t feel Pacquiao’s punch, it didn’t do anything to me, maybe it’s because Pacquiao was coming up in weight, I believe that was his first fight at welterweight so I didn’t really feel his punch. With him it was more of an accumulation, you know, but I would say about the same, they punch the same.”

As to who hit him hardest, De La Hoya has always given that honour to Ike Quartey, a man whose punches he says ‘felt like bricks.’

Whilst Hopkins is now promotional partners with De La Hoya and Mayweather does the same as well as the rounds on the exhibition circuit, Pacquiao is now considering taking that a step further to return at the age of 45 and battle for a welterweight world title.

Despite the pair officially calling time on their careers in 2017 and 2021, they continue to scrap it out in boxing rings around the world in exhibition contests and now they could be set to meet again at their ages of 47 for Mayweather and 45 for Pacquiao.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if anything happens these days, so the possibility is still there,” Rizin promoter, Nobuyuki Sakakibara, told SunSport. “We still have a good relationship with Floyd but he’s not thinking of coming back to real competitive fights.

Pacquiao and his team have been discussing a rematch with Money Mayweather since 2023 but nothing has yet materialized and as a result, Mayweather will fight John Gotti III on August 23 instead.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao will take on an ex-kickboxing champion, Rukiya Anpo, in Tokyo but a shot at a return to professional boxing could be on the horizon for the legendary fighter too as the WBC is reported to have given him a chance to face Marrio Barrios.

“Depending on the result and his performance in his upcoming fight on July 28th, we need to assess the market to see if his return would make sense,” Sakakibara added. “This is a single bout agreement so if we were to have him back, we need to make sure there is a demand in the market.

“If we can create momentum and anticipation together – since Manny himself is still wanting to have competitive fights – he’s not thinking that this is his last fight.

“So, if things turn out right, there is a good possibility where there could be more Manny Pacquiao fights in Rizin.”

Floyd Mayweather saw immense potential in Gervonta Davis when they first joined forces. “Uh, no I asked [was] what [Floyd] for the whole summer before I signed with him you know before I even you know signed anything on paper he already bought me cars, he bought me jewelry, and things like that,” said Davis in an interview once.

This potential fight has a lot of intrigue for fans. It’s a classic student vs. teacher narrative, with added spice from their current rivalry. So far, Mayweather hasn’t directly responded to the challenge. He’s currently retired from professional boxing but does participate in exhibition matches.

Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather

There’s a significant age difference to consider. Mayweather is 47, while Davis is in his prime at 28. Floyd Mayweather capped off his professional boxing career with an undefeated record of 50-0.  Legends like Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez tried and failed to dethrone him. Throughout his career, Mayweather never even hit the canvas from an opponent’s punch.  Given his dominance, facing him in the ring required exceptional courage or perhaps a hint of recklessness.

“I’m the best, nobody can beat me,” said Mayweather once and it will be up to Davis’ trainer to prove that statement right.

They can sometimes go under the radar, but the people who train the best boxers are pretty brave as well and Gervonta Davis‘ trainer has gone after Floyd Mayweather.

As Mayweather once declared: “I’m the best, nobody can beat me.” Davis‘ trainer is planning to put that statement to the test.

Mayweather retired from professional boxing with a record of 50-0, with huge names like Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez failing to beat him when the chance came around.

He has never even been knocked down by an opponent’s punch, so you’d have to be brave or stupid to take him on.

The trainer’s statement

Taking to Instagram, Gervonta Davis‘ trainer wrote, “Gervonta Davis can decode the shoulder roll if Floyd can fight another exhibition. He can fight another fight if he is great as he says he is. Let’s stop spinning the fans, Gervonta vs Floyd.”

Davis was actually a part of Mayweather Productions in the past when he was trying to make his name, but since departing in 2022, he has been at loggerheads with Mayweather and a fight has been on the cards.

 

Mayweather had big hopes for Davis when they started working together.
