Boxing legend Claressa Shields shares her top picks for female fighters who have shaped the sport.

By Mohamed Bahaa

Claressa Shields, often hailed as the “GWOAT” (Greatest Woman of All Time), holds a prominent place in women’s boxing history. As she gears up to face WBC heavyweight world champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse this weekend, Shields reflects on her contemporaries who have also left an indelible mark on the sport.

The 29-year-old boxing icon shared her perspective on the leading figures in women’s boxing today, creating a “Mount Rushmore” of current female fighters.

“If there’s a Mount Rushmore of women’s boxers right now, I would say it’s myself, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano, and maybe Mikaela Mayer,” Shields stated. “You can even add Savannah Marshall to that list,” she added.

Shields recognizes the exceptional achievements of these fighters, each of whom has held multiple world titles. However, she also emphasizes the unique and passionate fan bases that support these athletes, underscoring their significance in the sport.

“They have their own fan base, fans come out to see them,” Shields noted. “We all kind of get behind each other and support each other here and there.”

Shields’ admiration for her fellow boxers extends beyond their skills in the ring. She appreciates the camaraderie and mutual support that exists among these top fighters, which she believes is vital for the growth of women’s boxing.

Through her own promotion company, T-Rex Promotions, Shields advocates for the elevation of women’s boxing as a whole. “It doesn’t just need to be one name and one face,” she stated, highlighting the importance of diverse representation in the sport.

As the anticipation builds for her upcoming bout, Claressa Shields remains a steadfast champion not only for her own career but for the entire realm of women’s boxing. Her acknowledgment of her peers reinforces the collective strength and influence of these athletes, ensuring that women’s boxing continues to thrive and inspire future generations.

Shields’ dedication to advancing women’s boxing extends beyond her in-ring achievements and promotional efforts. She actively engages in community outreach and mentorship programs, aiming to inspire young girls to pursue their dreams both inside and outside the ring. Her vision for the sport encompasses not only creating opportunities for current athletes but also fostering an environment where young talent can flourish. Shields is determined to leave a lasting legacy that transcends her own career, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future in women’s boxing.

Claressa Shields is, without a doubt, the best women’s boxer in the world. The two-time Olympic gold medalist was the first undisputed champion in two different divisions — light middleweight and middleweight — in an era with four belts to win. At 14-0 as a professional and atop all pound-for-pound lists, she can continue doing what she’s doing and cruise into the Boxing Hall of Fame.

But that’s simply not Shields’ style.

She’s always wanted more, from the time she was growing up in Flint, Mich. One medal podium wasn’t good enough, she needed a second. One pro division wasn’t good enough, she needed more belts. One sport wasn’t good enough — she decided to join the Professional Fighters League to compete in mixed martial arts with the hopes of becoming the greatest women’s combat fighter of all time, and in hopes of bigger paydays in an industry where the gaps between men and women are often stark.

On Saturday, she’ll make an even bigger mark in combat sports by fighting Kelsey DeSantis, when they’ll become the first women to fight on a professional mixed martial arts card in Saudi Arabia, according to the PFL.

“It’s going to inspire the women there. It’s going to inspire their culture and their country,” said Shields, who will fight on the “PFL Champions vs. Bellator Champions” preliminary card, which will be televised in the United States on ESPNews and ESPN+.

“If you go and look at my story to see everything that I went through and how sports changed my life, they will feel that every woman and every man deserves sports. Sports change lives and it saves lives,” she told The Athletic, calling the bout a step “in the right direction” for the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia has long been criticized by international human rights groups for its record on women’s rights, even amid some loosening of social restrictions. Women could not vote or run for office until 2015. They began driving legally in 2018. Women, unlike men, still must have the consent of a male legal guardian to get married.

In terms of sports, women first represented Saudi Arabia in the Olympics in 2012, when judoist Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani and runner Sarah Attar competed in London. Women were not welcomed as spectators at sporting events in the kingdom until 2018, which led to an explosion in attendance, according to the Saudi Ministry of Sport.

Shields’ journey to this point has been anything but typical. She has long been one of the most feared and technical strikers when on her feet, but has far less experience grappling on the mat. It’s why you rarely see boxers make the transition — once the fight hits the ground, more experienced and skilled jiu-jitsu practitioners often find a way to submit you.

Shields, who trains with Murcielago MMA in Lansing, Mich., said she had to “force myself to be uncomfortable for months” while learning how to grapple. Many times she lost breath while being choked out on the mat and questioned why she made the leap to begin with.

Kelsey DeSantis VS CLARESSA SHIELDS

“I have days at the gym where I tell myself, ‘I don’t know why I do this,’” she said. “I don’t know why I’m doing MMA. I get paid more in boxing. I’m respected more in boxing. Boxing is easier. Why am I here?”

But she comes back willing to learn. Nowadays, she said, she’s more comfortable and confident. Each training session helps her confidence that if she is, indeed, taken to the mat against DeSantis — a purple belt in jiu-jitsu and former U.S. Marine Corps member — she’ll be ready.

A win on Saturday would be Shields’ third in as many professional MMA fights and get her closer to her goal of fighting for a PFL belt. She said after this weekend’s bout, she plans on boxing two times in a row and then closing the year with another MMA fight. Shields’ goal is to be champion in both sports to ensure her the title of the greatest woman of all time in combat sports, a moniker (“GWOAT”) that she has often used for herself in boxing.

“Whether that’s a year from now or two or three years from now, I want to still be reigning in boxing and then fight for the PFL championship and win,” Shields said. “To hold both of those titles at the same time, to me that would be the biggest thing I could do in combat sports.”

But she thinks her bout is significant no matter the outcome.

“I feel like adding sports will bring more value to their culture and to their women,” Shields said. “It will make them feel important and make them feel like their life has a purpose through sports. That’s what I’m hoping that they can see with me.”

As a result, she relished the opportunity to share the ring with aspiring boxer Jodeci Chadwick, who is set to make her pro debut soon.

TERENCE CRAWFORD

Chadwick has been publicly exchanging words with Shields for an extended period of time.

Unlike most of those who trash talk pro fighters on social media however, she actually turned up to the gym to put the gloves on.

Shields happily accepted the challenge and the pair began a sparring session.

After little more than 30 seconds, Shields had Chadwick backed up against the ropes.

She did not hold back like in a regular sparring session.

Shields began to pummel her helpless opponent until coaches stepped in to separate the pair.

Chadwick then seemingly took issue with the gloves she was wearing and refused to fight any more.

This infuriated Shields who had to be restrained while trying to attack her further.

Shields posted the footage to Instagram on Friday.

She captioned it: “I can’t believe this punk ass girl pulled to the gym after trolling me for months and couldn’t last more than 30 seconds. I damn near killed this h**.”

Chadwick replied with her own post.

It read: “Yes, me and Claressa Shields fought today and no she ain’t beat my ass. She felt me and they stopped it, that’s the truth.”

A champion for women’s empowerment inside and outside the ring, on July 27 at her upcoming challenge for the WBC Heavyweight Championship at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, boxing superstar and two-time Olympic Gold medalist Claressa Shields will present her first-ever “GWOAT” (Greatest Woman Of All Time) award to two of Detroit’s greatest female leaders: recent International Boxing Hall Of Fame Inductee Jackie Kallen and “Power Of One Dedicated Woman” community awards co-founder Dotti Sharp.

“It will be a great honor for me to recognize Jackie Kallen and Dotti Sharp as magnificent Detroit women whose efforts have improved our communities and inspired women around the world to be leaders, mentors, and trailblazers,” said Shields. “I invite fans in attendance and viewers worldwide on July 27 to join me in celebrating their dedication and accomplishments. It will be a GWOAT night for all!”

Kallen’s life was the inspiration for the 2004 film Against the Ropes, in which actress Meg Ryan portrayed her. In 2024, Kallen was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the Non-Participant category. She has also authored two books – “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” and “Between the Ropes.” Kallen is also the subject of Peter Mann’s book “Against the Odds: The Jackie Story.”

Kallen makes appearances nationwide as a motivational speaker and currently lives in the Detroit area and manages three professional boxers, including Mykquan Williams and Sam Rizzo.

Did Devin Haney make a huge mistake taking up the Ryan Garcia fight? After all, he was knocked down three times in a single night which ultimately led to a Majority Decision loss for ‘The Dream’. The cold and calculated undefeated boxer had no answers for the onslaught that Garcia brought inside the ring. But, the 25-year-old boxer was handed a saving grace.

RYAN GARCIA VS DEVIN HANEY AND CLARESSA SHIELDS

The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) found Garcia guilty of taking the banned substance Ostarine, and declared his win against Haney a ‘no contest’Alas, ‘the Dream was vindicated! But the damage was already done. The fight made him lose face in the industry and damaged the possibility of securing potentially lucrative fights. Remember how Haney’s promoter, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, decided to not bid for the fight against his mandatory challenger Sandor Martin? However, throughout the entire fiasco and online slander, there was one woman who stood by Haney’s side, Claressa Shields!

Off late, Shields came down hard against a fan on social media who claimed that ‘King Ry’s’ win against Devin Haney was legitimate. But an obvious fallacy in the person’s logic had to be called out. Garcia coming in over the weight limit for the fight was not the issue, but something glaringly obvious was.

Ryan Garcia VS Devin Haney

An internet user who goes by the name of @NukeUndisputed on X, wanted to make a case for how having a significant weight advantage in the fight did not guarantee a victory. In light of the matter being discussed, Ryan Garcia was roped in. You might remember how Garcia came in at 143.2lbs, 3.2lbs above the required weight limit. Taking this example as a case study, he went on to cite a few recent instances where a boxer with a significant weight advantage over his opponent lost. Among them, Ryan Garcia’s brother Sean Garcia who got stopped by Amado Vargas in the sixth round of a scheduled eight-round bout, also got a mention.

“Ryan Garcia’s younger brother Sean Garcia copied Ryan’s plan of missing weight by 3lbs against Armando Vargas and just got stopped. Gio Cabrera missed weight by 2lbs and got stopped by William Zepeda. Danny Jacobs came in 2lbs over Shane Mosley Jr. and got stopped. The idea that weight is why Devin Haney lost to Ryan Garcia when Devin is supposed to be superiorly “skilled” is incorrect. He lost because he wasn’t good enough,” the user wrote on X.

CLaressa Shields

But Shields pointed out one obvious flaw in his long X post. Unlike Ryan Garcia, other fighters weren’t on PEDs. “Hahaha he lost cause Ryan was on PEDs wtf is wrong with you,” the 2-time undisputed champion wrote on X.

Garcia’s A-sample as well as B-sample before the fight against Devin Haney came back positive. Subsequently, Garcia was given a one-year suspension, forfeiture of his million official contract purse, and a win against Haney overturned, as punishment by NYSAC for failing the drug tests. The problem was only compounded by the recent expulsion order from the WBC due to his recent Islamophobic and racist remarks.

Meanwhile, the former junior-middleweight champion, tired of his social antics, urged ‘King Ry’ to take some accountability for his actions.

Go look in the mirror!

Safe to say that Ryan Garcia is down in the dumps. But, despite his long list of penalizations, he seems to be attacking anybody who doesn’t agree with his narrative. Sometimes, his attacks are downright crass. Such was the case when Shields was subjected to nasty DMs filled with crude remarks from Ryan Garcia. “I’m saying you said my mom don’t got cancer crack head. Are you f*king an idiot. Dumb a*s crack head read b*tch. Screenshot b*tch.” One of Garcia’s DMs read.

In the mood to give an appropriate reality check to Garcia, Shields wrote on X, “Man @RyanGarcia you are a piece of shit! You use your platform to lie and mislead the people. It’s sad. And now that your roller coaster is going down you are pointing the finger at everyone else! Go look in the mirror! You are the problem! You are The reason. Stop using…”

Is ‘GWOAT’ justified in her actions to torch Garcia over his long list of misfortunes? Or does Garcia deserve every bit of criticism he has been getting? Let us know in the comment section below.

Claressa Shields and Lauren Price are the only two women to have won Olympic middleweight gold medals so far; Shields and Price are now professional world champions operating in different weight divisions but the American star can see a super-fight with Price taking place down the line

Claressa Shields is a unique fighter. An undisputed champion, she is a multi-weight titlist who has also competed in MMA and who will go for a title in a fourth division later this month.

She will challenge Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse for the WBC heavyweight championship in Detroit.

The Olympic middleweight gold medal has only been won by two women, Shields in 2012 and 2016, and most recently Wales’ Lauren Price, who triumphed at the Tokyo Games.

Price dropped down to welterweight after the Olympics and is only seven bouts into her professional career, but has won the inaugural women’s British title and the WBA world title already.

Shields does not rule out Price becoming one of her future rivals.

“It’s hard to put anything past Olympic champions. She won the Olympics 2021,” Shields told Sky Sports.

“I feel like when you’ve been all over the world and you’ve boxed and you’ve won World championships, it’s kind of destined for you to be great in the pros. I wish her the best of luck.”

They are not on a collision course in the immediate future. Price has plenty of ambitions to realise at welterweight and Shields is moving up in weight for the Lepage-Joanisse fight.

But heavyweight is what the WBC calls its 12st 7lbs division, i.e. light-heavyweight (the WBO light-heavyweight title will also be on the line in their fight).

Shields has operated across several weight classes, super-welter and super-middle included, but is a natural middleweight.

Price’s greatest amateur successes were at middleweight, where she won World and European gold medals as well as the Olympic Games. Along the way, she also beat a light-heavyweight World champion at 75kgs.

Shields doesn’t think their current weight classes will necessarily keep them apart.

“She won the Olympics at 165lbs (75kgs) just as I did – two times – and if she ever wants to fight I would love to fight against her too,” Shields said.

CLaressa Shields

“I believe anything is possible and I really want to fight anybody that wants to fight me. So if Lauren Price keeps winning and comes to 154lbs, 160, 168, we can fight and prove who’s the best Olympic champion.”

Shields’ great rival is another Briton, Savannah Marshall. The American beat Marshall in their 2022 grudge match. But Marshall is now also competing in MMA as she pursues another clash with Shields.

“I beat her in the UK with 20,000 of her fans. She needs to come to America and fight me in front of 20,000 of my fans and let’s see if she can handle being booed and her national anthem being booed and people telling her she sucks!” Shields declared.

“I would love to fight her again and prove that I’m not just one time better than you, I’m two times better than you either inside the cage and definitely inside the ring. It really doesn’t matter which one.”

But first Shields has a more immediate task, winning yet another accolade against Lepage-Joanisse.

“I’m going for my fourth division,” she said. “It’s going to be big and it’s going to be history-making.”
