Sabalenka and Gauff Remain Unbeaten at the Australian Open: Key Matches to Watch

There are only two players left in the Australian Open who have not lost a match this year: Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff. Both players have exceptional talent, but they agree that it’s their mental strength that makes them champions.

During her second-round match, Sabalenka had a moment of realisation, thinking to herself, “Oh, my God, I’m really tough.” After the match, she told reporters, “I’ve had a lot of struggles over the years. I think all those challenges have made me really tough.”

Coco Gauff, on the other hand, has learned to focus on the process rather than the result. She reflected on her two Grand Slam finals – the 2022 French Open and the 2023 US Open – explaining, “In the first final, I felt close to winning, and that made me nervous. In the second final, it felt further away, so I played more freely.

Both Sabalenka, who is ranked No.1, and Gauff, ranked No.3, are still unbeaten in 2023, with 8 wins each and no sets lost in Melbourne. Sabalenka has dropped 23 games, while Gauff has lost 20, and they could be on track to meet in the semi-finals.

Before that, there are some exciting fourth-round matches to look forward to:

No.1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. No.14 Mirra Andreeva
Sabalenka leads 3-1 in their head-to-head, having won their most recent match in Brisbane. Andreeva, who is only 16, faced Sabalenka last year in Madrid but was nervous and struggled, winning just four games. However, after a strong run in 2023, Andreeva feels more prepared and is aiming for a better result this time. Sabalenka, who has won 17 consecutive Grand Slam matches on hard courts, is chasing her third straight Australian Open title.

Coco Gauff vs Aryna Sabalenka

No.3 Coco Gauff vs. Belinda Bencic
This is a 1-1 head-to-head, with Bencic winning in 2019 and Gauff winning in 2023. Bencic has battled injuries but has made it to the fourth round after a tough match against Naomi Osaka, who retired due to an injury. Gauff, after a strong 6-4, 6-2 win over Leylah Fernandez, is one of the best players in the world right now, and this will be a challenging match for both.

Olga Danilovic vs. No.11 Paula Badosa
Danilovic, ranked No.55, caused an upset by beating No.7 seed Jessica Pegula. This is her first time reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam, and she is aiming to make history as the first Serbian woman to reach a quarter-final since Ana Ivanovic in 2015. Badosa, who struggled earlier this season, is now feeling more confident after a win against No.17 Marta Kostyuk.

No.18 Donna Vekic vs. No.27 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Pavlyuchenkova has had a strong start to the tournament, winning 6-1, 6-2 in the third round. She is aiming to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in a long while. Vekic, who beat No.12 Diana Shnaider in a thrilling match, is hoping for her best-ever result at the Australian Open.

There’s plenty to look forward to as the tournament progresses, with many exciting matches ahead!

Iga Swiatek’s reign at the top has finally ended. Earlier today, Aryna Sabalenka displaced the Polish star in the WTA rankings table and became the new World Number 1. While Swiatek has been away from the court since her quarterfinal defeat against Jessica Pegula at the US Open, Sabalenka has enjoyed a winning run of late. However, recent form isn’t the only factor behind Sabalenka’s rise to the top as a controversial WTA rule came to light.

While there are as many as 10 mandatory WTA 1000 tournaments, the women’s body also requires players to play in the 6 mandatory WTA 500 tournaments. The move has been widely debated, with players calling out the grueling schedule which takes a toll on their physical and mental health. There are as many as 17 WTA 500 tournaments played in a season and players have to compulsorily play in six of them.

Sabalenka has already played in four WTA 500 tournaments this season, Brisbane International, Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, Ecotrans Ladies Open, and the Citi Open. Swiatek has played in just 2 WTA 500 tournaments, the United Cup and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. As a result, Swiatek has lost out on crucial WTA ranking points, which has affected her downgrade from the top spot to the second position.

Further, a tennis insider also raised objections over the mandatory WTA 500 rule, saying, “The problem is not that Iga Świątek is falling to second place in the ranking, because that was predictable, Sabalenka deserved to be in the lead. The problem is the controversial rules of the WTA ranking construction. 6 mandatory WTA 500 events (XD) , the requirement to play every now and then for the best.”

Many players, including Iga Swiatek, have strongly criticized the WTA for the scheduling mess. Earlier today, it was Sloane Stephens who made her feelings felt on this matter.

Sloane Stephens joins Iga Swiatek in voicing her concerns

With a growing number of mandatory tournaments, there is hardly any breathing space left for the players. This eventually results in their physical and mental health taking a toll and not many players are able to escape injury-free from the grueling season. As a result, Sloane Stephens became the latest player to voice her concerns.

She said, “Like you’re just there because like if you don’t want to sign or you don’t you’re supposed to be or you enter the tournament or you don’t have any more withdrawals like you’re just like I’m present but I’m not like mentally and not here, but I feel like that’s just kind of one of the bad things about the tour. Both tours ATP and WTA, is that you’re kind of forced to play, even when you’re probably not in the best mental capacity, you’re probably not the best physical shape, or you might be injured or whatever it is, and you just arrive because that’s what you’re supposed to do.”

Earlier, Swiatek also expressed concerns, saying that playing more tournaments will make tennis less interesting. It is high time that the tennis bodies take into account the players’ health and ease out the tennis season. Do you feel that the WTA should scrap the mandatory rule in the WTA 500 events? Coco Gauff suffered another serving disaster throughout her semi-final defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in Wuhan.

It was another catastrophic day for the Coco Gauff serve despite her getting so close to defeating Aryna Sabalenka.

The match was sealed by Gauff’s 21st double fault of the match – a record for a single match this year on the WTA Tour.

Despite her serving woes also present in Beijing last week, she still mangled to capture the title.

With Gauff’s game so well-rounded in all other categories, besides arguably her forehand, the 20-year-old still came so close to toppling Sabalenka, who has only lost one match since losing in Toronto two months ago.

Coco Gauff explains why her serve ‘surprised’ her

Giving up 21 free points is criminal – 24 could win you a set – yet not unusual in this stage of Gauff’s career.

It was the 19 double faults at the US Open which saw her title defense come to an end again in three sets.

Interestingly, the serve is obviously limiting Gauff’s success and win rate, yet not seeing her simply roll over for opponents.

She said, via Punto de Break: “I am working on new things, a slightly different movement, and it is logical that I may encounter problems. I was very surprised at how well my serve worked in Beijing.

“I arrived here somewhat tired, but I take many positive things from coming close to beating one of the best in the world despite my poor serving performance handicap. I think I just need time and to keep working.”

Barely anyone has got a set against Sabalenka in the past few months – this defeat is no major embarrassment or surprise, more just the latest miserable update in Gauff’s continued serving woes.

Coco Gauff is only one fix away from another Grand Slam title

Unfortunately, it’s not by any means a quick fix. The ‘yips’ are a brutal tattoo on any tennis player, remaining forcer difficulty to conceal.

However, her opponent Sabalenka is in many ways the perfect player to look at.

The Belarusian also endured a total serving nightmare during the 2022 season, striking 428 double faults in 601 service games.

Yet just a year on, the Belarusian captured the Australian Open title, something she successfully defended this year.

Gauff’s taste of a major title is something she’s naturally craving once more – luckily she has the perfect player in front of her to prove a route past her problems is possible.
