Simone Biles is getting kind of old for this. Just maybe not too old to keep going. Maybe.

Minutes after the American gymnastics star won the seventh Olympic gold of her career on Saturday in a vault final that left little doubt that even at 27 years old she remains in a class all by herself, she played coy when asked if the event marked the final time she would ever explode off the springboard in competition.

While Biles allowed she was officially retiring her eponymous Yurchenko double pike vault because “I kind of nailed that one” at the Paris Olympics, she didn’t rule out a return to the Games when they move to Los Angeles in 2028.

“Never say never,” Biles said. “Next Olympics are at home. So you just never know. I am getting really old.”

At times, it’s hard to tell. After winning gold in the individual all-around and helping the US to a dominant win in team all-around, Simone Biles picked up her third gold medal in five days on Saturday.

Over the past few Olympic cycles, women’s artistic gymnastics has undergone a sea change. The average age of the best competitors has increased and a number of big names are enjoying extended careers.

By the time LA rolls around in 2028, Biles will be 31. Maria Gorokhovskaya is the oldest gymnast to win the all-around title, taking the gold at 30 years old in 1952 for the Soviet Union. Not that making history would be anything new to Biles – she is already the second-oldest gymnast to take the all-around title. Hungarian Ágnes Keleti continued to win individual gold medals at 35.

Biles is not the only US gymnast who could have eyes on 2028.

Jade Carey, 24, was edged out of silver by Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade in the vault. Not that Carey was complaining. Three years after tripping during the vault final and finishing last, Carey achieved the “redemption” she was looking for when she pointed to an Olympic return.

“I wanted to prove to myself that I can do two vaults in the final,” Carey said. “(To) walk away with the medal is really special for me.”

Carey’s Olympics are over. Biles’ are not. She will have two more chances to boost her medal haul in Paris in the balance beam and floor exercise finals on Monday. And with a home Games ahead, she may go beyond that.

The pair became synonymous with golf and Woods arguably transcended it as they forged an exceptional rivalry in the 2000s but with the sport only being an Olympic event once in the last century, they’ve never had a true shot.

Tiger Woods accidentally hits a fan on the Masters golf course, a day to forget

Golf experienced a 112-year hiatus from the Olympics between 1904-2016 before it was left off the list of events again in Tokyo 2020 meaning that Woods and Mickelson only ever had Rio de Janeiro eight years ago as their chance to become Olympians.

But unfortunately for the pair, it missed the peak of their careers and they were considered ineligible for selection by the Olympic Rules and International Golf Federation.

“The top-15 world-ranked players will be eligible for the Olympics, with a limit of four players from a given country,” the governing bodies ruled at the time. “Beyond the top 15, players will be eligible based on the world rankings.

Both were particularly and cruelly unfortunate. Two years prior, Woods was still the world number one, which was a spot he held since 1997, whilst Mickelson was the world number two ever since 2001.

Yet Woods suffered injuries and Mickelson‘s age and flirtation with LIV Golf saw them both lose their opportunities to become Olympians, even though the event will also be hosted at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Let’s start with the obvious question: What the heck?

Terence Crawford, boxing’s pound-for-pound king, is fighting a guy with a professional record of 10-0-1?

Well, Israin Madrimov is more than a guy. He’s a seasoned, 29-year-old fighter from Uzbekistan who’s logged 370 amateur fights and good enough to win the WBA super welterweight title in March.

Therein lies the appeal for Crawford (40-0 with 31 knockouts).

At 36, Crawford is aiming to win a title in a fourth weight division, and continuing a steady climb in weight to prepare him for a potential showdown with Canelo Alvarez.

But this could prove to be an entertaining test for Crawford.

Israil Madrimov: The Breakdown — THE FIGHT SITE

Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz will take on Jose Valenzuela at BMO Stadium (above) tonight. This will actually be the first time BMO Stadium has ever hosted boxing, and what a card it will host.

Outside of the main event – Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov – there is still a myriad of matches with intrigue including former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. in his first match in two years taking on Jarrell Miller, and Cruz vs. Valenzuela of course.

Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz vs Jose Valenzuela fight: How to watch, time, card

Pitbull Cruz has gained somewhat of a cult following recently thanks to his all-out style and strong performance against Gervonta Davis. His route to the WBA title was impressive to say the least, which makes his decision to fight Jose Valenzuela in his first title defense all the more curious. Valenzuela has lost two of his last three fights and lost by knockout to Edwin De Los Santos less than two years ago.

Valenzuela looked phenomenal in his most recent match against Chris Colbert, but that is still not enough to inspire much confidence against someone as hot as Cruz. Here’s everything to know about tonight’s bout.

Predictions for Cruz vs. Valenzuela

Joey Mills, BetFred Insights: Cruz by knockout

Mills writes, “Valenzuela is keen and talented, but Cruz is a fighter of genuine world class.” He adds, “Cruz has knocked out 18 men across his 26 victories. He will be approaching this bout looking to do the same.”

Rohit Lohan, Essentially Sports: Cruz to win, Valenzuela could keep it close

Lohan writes, “[Cruz] can land effective punches throughout the fight. He has what it takes to fight a tall, lanky southpaw and beat him. The fans still remember his fight with Giovanni Cabrera, the closest bout of his career, but he slowly broke him down. He has the experience to do the same to Valenzuela, too. He has the credentials, too.”

Terence Crawford will fight Israil Madrimov in a hotly anticipated super welterweight bout this August at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California, United States.

The former, one of only three men in history to be the undisputed world champion at two weights, has held titles at lightweight, light welterweight and welterweight across the course of an undefeated career to date.

But he will put his record on the line in pursuit of what could be sporting immortality in his latest contest, as he meets Madrimov, the reigning WBA super welterweight belt holder at the home of Los Angeles FC.

Terence Crawford Vs. Israil Madrimov: Odds, Records, Prediction

The division, also known as light middleweight or junior middleweight, saw The Dream from Uzbekistan claim his crown against Magomed Kurbanov in March – and with both men still without a professional career loss against them, there’s plenty at stake for them both.

Elsewhere on the bill, former heavyweight world champion Andy Ruiz will face Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller, while Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and Jose Valenzuela will fight at junior welterweight.

It’s shaping up to be an entertaining night of boxing action, but just how can you ensure you don’t miss a moment of it? Below, GOAL brings you all the details on Terence Crawford vs Israil Madrimov.

Former heavyweight champ Andy Ruiz Jr. is returning from a long hiatus to take on Jarrell Miller in Los Angeles tonight.

Both fighters have something to prove in tonight’s match. Ruiz has been out of the fight for nearly two years and is looking to prove himself worthy of still contending for a heavyweight title. Miller, meanwhile, is seeing his first action since suffering his first career loss, a TKO at the hands of Daniel Dubois.

Of course, many of Miller’s victories came before he tested positive for a banned substance in 2019. That positive test actually propelled Ruiz to his heavyweight title win over Anthony Joshua, as Ruiz took Miller’s place in that fight. Ruiz though, has only fought twice in the last four years. His underwhelming wins over Chris Arreola and Luis Ortiz in that time do not inspire much confidence that he can handle someone of Miller’s talent.

Matchroom Boxing CEO Eddie Hearn has suggested that former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua may be nearing the end of his professional boxing career, Saturday PUNCH  reports.

Speaking to BoxNation, Hearn expressed doubt about Joshua’s long-term future in the sport, stating, “I don’t think he has four or five more years in him, but who knows?”

The promoter indicated that Joshua, who turns 35 in October, might only have “three, four, five, or six more” fights left before hanging his gloves.

Joshua is set to face Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium on September 21, in a title fight to be broadcast live on TNT Sports Box Office. The bout comes after his knockout victory over Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia.

Hearn emphasised Joshua’s willingness to take on any opponent, saying, “AJ would fight anybody. He would be happy to fight Ruiz again. He’s not going to be around forever.”

Despite hinting at retirement, Hearn also outlined ambitious plans for Joshua’s future, including a potential undisputed title shot against the winner of the Tyson Fury-Oleksandr Usyk rematch scheduled for December 2 in Riyadh.

“Part of me would like to see AJ beat Dubois and then fight the winner, Usyk-Fury, twice. If you won those, imagine winning those and then calling it. That would be unbelievable,” Hearn added.

Charlie Woods and Eva Lye won their respective divisions at the 2024 South Florida PGA Junior Cup.

Contested at the BallenIsles Country Club’s newly renovated East Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, the event is simply known as “The Cup” and is one of the eight junior majors on the South Florida PGA Junior Tour.

Woods beat out 62 other junior boys golfers, while Lye bested a field of 25 girls. Woods was the only golfer in his division to finish under par after shooting scores of 73-68-73.

“I feel like it was a compilation of a lot of hard work this summer,” Woods told the PGA of America. “I wanted to redeem myself, and I feel great about how I played.”

Two weeks ago, Woods came up short of advancing to the match-play portion of the U.S. Junior Amateur. Only the top 64 earned a spot in that bracket.

“I wanted it so bad,” he said of his junior title. “I felt focused, and I knew what I had to do to get it done. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do better.”

As for Lye, she never led until the very end, posting a 1-under 71 to nudge past Abigail Sheldon.

“I didn’t want to give up even though I had a bad day yesterday,” said Lye of her second round 77.

Lye is the daughter of former PGA Tour player Mark Lye, 71, who won one PGA Tour event.

Steve Williams caddied for Tiger Woods during the height of the superstar’s success but was sacked for temporarily jumping ship to another player.

The New Zealand native accompanied Woods on some of the world’s most challenging courses between 1999 and 2011, undoubtedly an asset to Wood’s 15 major career wins and record 82 PGA Tour titles – nine ahead of legend Jack Nicklaus. For his efforts, Williams became one of the world’s most notable caddies in golfing history, racking up a reported net worth of £15.7million ($20m) following the unprecedented string of success – largely part to his salary and percentage of Woods’ winnings.

With Williams at his side, Woods would win 64 of his tour victories, 13 of his 15 majors, nine Tour Player of the Year awards, and spend 281 weeks at World No. 1 between June 2005 and October 2010. But the good times would soon come to an end for Williams, who has previously opened up about the reason that he was sacked by Woods.

Speaking in the Woods documentary of 2021, Williams said: “After the Masters, Tiger took a little bit of a break away from the game just to get his mind fresh as well as to deal with some niggling injuries. As a caddie of Tiger Woods and a great friend of his I wanted to deeply respect what he was going through but I still didn’t know when he would be playing again.”

He added: “I was just expecting a phone call at any moment to say ‘I’m playing again next week, get your s*** together and get over here’. There was a lot of uncertainty. So when a friend I had caddied for before called me and asked me if I could caddie for him, I ran that by Tiger and he said absolutely no problem.”

However, Woods is said to have changed his mind on the situation soon after, calling Williams to say that if he caddied for someone else then it would be the end of their professional relationship. Williams explained: “But a couple of days before the tournament, Tiger changed his mind.

“He had his agent call and he said ‘If you go and caddie for your friend, that will be the end of your time caddying for Tiger’. I thought there was no way the guy is going to fire me. But a couple of days after the tournament I got the phone call to say our time had ended.

For teaming up with Scott, Williams also noted how he hadn’t just lost an employer, but had also lost a long-time friend. He added: “When he fired me, I thought he was firing me as a golf caddie and not as a friend. Tiger was the best man at my wedding, I didn’t think we’d have no communication for the rest of our lives. That just didn’t even enter my mind. To this day I find that a hard pill to swallow. Someone you spend 13 years with, with all your time and all your effort, and the guy can’t even speak to you.”

Williams would work with Scott until 2017, before caddying for Jason Day briefly in 2019. He would take to the courses with Scott again between 2022 and 2023. Woods, meanwhile, hasn’t won a major title since the 2019 Masters tournament.

Simone Biles has long been nicknamed a “GOAT” — or the “Greatest Of All Time.” Now, she has an accessory to match the acronym.

The American gymnast, who became the most decorated American gymnast in the history of the Olympic Games this week, drew praise from fans online after showing off a new necklace alongside her gold medal.

The white gold necklace, which she clung onto proudly while on the podium on Thursday, is a diamond-covered goat. It was custom made for the Olympian by Janet Heller, founder and CEO of Janet Heller Fine Jewelry in Calabasas, Calif

“She reached out to us about five weeks ago to say that she wanted to do a goat necklace,” Heller told NBC News. Biles didn’t give Heller too many specifics, she said, and so the jeweler went through “several iterations” before landing on the final design.

“What she didn’t know we would be doing, which was a huge surprise to her, was that we made it 3D,” Heller said. The necklace has 546 diamonds.

Biles said she knew the necklace would draw attention.

“My GOAT necklace is just kind of an ode, because the people love it and some people hate it,” she told reporters at a news conference. “So, it’s like the best of both worlds. I was like, ‘OK, if it goes well, we’ll wear the GOAT necklace.’ I know people will go crazy over it.”

She elaborated in an interview with BBC, saying that her “haters” also inspired her to get the design.

“And the haters hate it so I love that even more and it’s just a special part of me that I have here, as well as in the village I have like a stuffed goat, just to get a reminder: ‘You can go out there, you can do it, you’ve done it before, so let’s go.’ ’

The accessory isn’t the first piece of jewelry Biles has purchased from Heller’s company, which also made a gold and diamond Olympic ring necklace for the gymnastics champion.

It’s also not the first time Biles has paid homage to the nickname. In 2021, she wore a leotard that had a bedazzled goat on it.

“We wore the goat just to kind of, I wouldn’t say piss people off, but mess with them because there were a lot of people that say, ‘Hey Simone, you’re the goat,’ but then if I acknowledge it, then I’m cocky,” Biles said in July 2021, during an episode of the Facebook Watch series “Simone vs. Herself.”

Heller described working with Biles as an “honor” and “privilege.”

UPDATE:‘No flashbacks’ – the moment Biles was sure about gold

“I found her to be so humble, down-to-earth and appreciative,” she said. “It really was the cherry on the top. She was amazing to work with.”

While some people have reached out to the jeweler asking her to recreate the goat necklace for them, Heller said she’s refused.

“It’s very special, very one-of-a-kind,” she said.

Biles has three events left in Paris, including a vault event on Saturday and balance beam and floor finals on Monday.
